It started as a role playing game on the show. Two episodes, one story, told at the table in real time. Nobody knew where it was going, including me.

When it was over, the story would not leave me alone. So I wrote it down. The book takes what those two episodes told and gives it the full treatment, from the heist that starts it all to the hunt that follows.
